Making Room in the Syllabus

Many teachers tell me that they have to cover their textbook (whether Action Pack or Jordan Opportunities) so thoroughly and rigorously that there is no time for anything else. Students want to know all the words on every page. I’m not sure that makes students learn better, or score higher on tests. Can we assign students some responsibility in learning? Like, for instance, tell them to read/learn a page of textbook at home? Take the poll below. Then post your comments on how teachers can make more room in the syllabus.

I don’t think teaching every page of the textbooks can help students learn better or even score higher ! why can’t we let students read or workout exercises on their own at home? That sure will enhance students’ sense of responsibility and make them more confident.
On the other hand , Having extracurricular activities such as stories, songs, games and extra reading material such as magazine articles and short stories will help students practice their language better than the rigid activities in their books. I find my students are more willing to read, talk about and act out new materials . Last year, I asked my 10th grade students to read ‘’ Story of An Hour’’ by Kate Chopin and I can never forget what an amazing experience it was. After discussing it, the students who didn’t want to read it were completely taken by merely the discussion of it that they wanted to act it out.
